Educational Specialist

Shelley Mikszan is an educational specialist and North Carolina Teaching Fellow with undergraduate and master’s degrees in Special Education. She has more than 20 years experience working with students K-12 in both public and private school settings.  While Behind the Behavior Psychology evaluations help create a blueprint of your child’s learning strengths and needs, Shelley is all about putting those plans into action.

As a former Director of Student Services and Upper School Learning Specialist, Shelley has been a trusted resource for students, parents, teachers, and administrators. When we say she is the best, we mean it, just ask anyone she has worked with. She excels at individualizing educational support for students as well as assisting parents with strategies for championing their children. Her tailored approach is based on collaborative relationships that create independent learners and parents who know how to advocate for their children. Teachers love consulting with Shelley on strategies for supporting neurodiverse students in their classrooms too.

Shelley has also run a successful private practice working with students in middle school, high school and college. Providing personalized support in executive functioning training, ADHD coaching, academic support and college planning, Shelley has empowered thousands of students to become confident and thriving, independent learners. She also specializes in helping students with concussions and long-term illnesses manage the ‘Return-to-Learn’ process at their schools.

Shelley creates individualized sessions for students who struggle with planning, prioritization, task initiation, time management, organization, and work completion. Boosting these skills leads to improved resiliency, self-esteem, and greater academic success for students.  Shelley’s background in special education allows her to holistically support neurodiverse children and young adults with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism, and Learning Disorders, as well as typically developing children whose parents are looking for extra academic support.

Shelley is a lifelong learner herself who also specializes in supporting students with the logistics of the college admissions process. Her ability to break down the process into manageable chunks lowers stress levels for both students and parents, allowing them to celebrate this exciting time.  Upon admittance, Shelley is a master at helping students with learning differences navigate how to secure accommodations and learning support at colleges and universities. Need help once in college? After entering college she provides academic and executive functioning support on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, depending on the individualized needs of students. She can assist with registration, specializing in helping students find courses and professors that are the best fit for their learning needs.  A former athlete and coach herself, Shelley also works with high school and college student-athletes across the country who need additional help managing their busy academic and athletic schedules.
